Structural Engineering

Shoreline Protection

Shoreline protection design is a branch of coastal engineering that focuses on the protection of beaches and coastal regions from natural hazards such as erosion and flooding. It is concerned with the maintenance and restoration of the shoreline, as well as protecting property and life the natural hazards.

The goal of shoreline protection is to minimize damage from the hazards. The process begins with a baseline assessment of the condition of the shoreline. This includes mapping existing conditions and evaluating what is present. A thorough analysis will help determine what needs to be done to improve or sustain the shoreline.

The next phase is creating a plan for how best to maintain or restore the shoreline. This involves determining what types of materials are suitable, where these materials can be obtained, and what type of protection is suitable for the shoreline reach. Once all this information has been gathered, it must then be presented for approval by relevant authorities (regional, provincial, or federal as required) before moving forward with implementing plans.
